Why you should use ChatGPT to write or tailor your CV
There are 2 main advantages of using ChatGPT in resume writing.
- It is crucial to apply within the first 24 hours after the position is posted. It gives you a chance you are not too late and the company hasn’t already found the best candidate. As a job seeker, I sometimes got a rejection letter just a second after I had applied for a position. And I know, it could be frustrating. AI helps you to speed up the application process. There is nothing wrong with using AI to polish up your CV faster.
- I hear ideas like “ChatGPT doesn’t know you as you do” or “You will shorten crucial information that helps you stand out from the pack”. I want to ask those experts. “If that’s the case, why do you use ATS for resume scanning before you even start to read them? What about the keywords you put in your ATS as a filter to find in the resume while scraping?”
In other words, the applicant usually beats an automated system at the first step of the process. Only after that, a CV is read by real people like hiring managers or recruiters. In fact you don’t need to choose between tailoring your CV for an ATS and providing the right information for potential employers. You just need to know the right way of prompting AI.
So, can employers tell when you use AI?
If you use only generic prompts, employers can detect the AI-written text in your CV or cover letter. Without context, AI writes the same summary for everyone. Be specific and add all possible details about your previous experience, skills, and functions in the previous positions. Instruct AI on how to formulate information for your CV. Provide some principles in your prompts and ask Chat GPT or whatever you use to stick to them while writing your CV. I will show you some helpful techniques at the end of this article.
How ChatGPT resumes can be detected?
There are common signs of using artificial language models. It is possible to detect them either manually or with special tools. Keep in mind that a resume is a piece of formal document with a specific structure. In this case, you don’t need to use storytelling or sarcasm to sound natural. A cover letter, though, helps you to introduce yourself, it may be a little bit more informal and emotional. ChatGPT can help you with writing both of them if you don’t rely only on it. Let's talk about main factors you need to control while using AI.
Generic information without a touch of your own experience and metrics.
Compare these two descriptions:
- Developed and refined lead generation strategies, resulting in a significant increase in qualified leads and conversions.
- Implemented and optimized lead generation funnels for [YYY name of product] in LI with a 47% connection rate and 1,5% conversion to leads at the end of the project. Secured 2 high - quality leads.
Both of them were written by AI using different prompts.
Repetitive writing and common worlds.
Compared to human beings, AI can't avoid redundancy, it often repeats the same ideas several times. Moreover, AI is prone to overuse some common words. You can either check your text manually or use our prompts below.
How to prompt ChatGPT to avoid AI-sound in your CV?
Add more details, metrics and specify accomplishments in your resume with these prompts:
- Define the STAR method:
- Give me an explanation of what the STAR method of resume writing is
- Write about your own experience with the STAR method:
-
Here is some notes about my previous position:
[insert your functions and everyday duties]
Based on the STAR method of writing resumes, give me feedback on my notes. Go over the Situation, Task, Action, and Results in my notes and explain in detail how I could improve them, such as by adding more details. Label this section “Feedback on notes”.
For each item I could improve, give an example bullet point of what this item may look like once improved. Label this section “Example bullet points for your resume with suggestion sections”
Finally, write a draft of the bullet points that I could use in my resume based on these notes to give me a starting point that I could add the improvements to later. When writing these, do not include the STAR method and instead just write bullet points that I could use in my resume. Label this section “First draft of your resume before suggestions”
In addition you can use these prompts to humanize the final text in the CV.
- Avoid common words:
-
